Saptavar - Somvar Vrat

Saptavar - Weekly Vrat and Pooja:
SOMVAR (Monday)

Somvar or Mondays are devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvatiji. Ancient Shashtras detail three types of Somvar Vrat and Pooja.
  1. Somvar - Shiv Ratri
  2. Solah Somvar - 16 Mondays
  3. Saumya Pradosh - Pradosh Vrat
Most of the Vrats are observed in a similar way. First do the Shiv Puja. Next read or listen to Vrat Katha or Story (Each type of Somvar Vrat has its own different Katha). There are no strict fasting rules for this Vrat, however, you may eat only once during the day.

The easiest way to pray to Lord Shiva is to offer jal(water), Kachcha Dudh (raw milk), Bel Patra, Dhatura etc on the Shivling. Shiva is 'Ashutosh' or quick to please. Even a little water on the Shivling suffices. When nothing is available, just chant the Shiva Mantra and Baba Bholenath will be happy.

All these three types of Vrats are supposed to be very powerful. It is believed that observing any of these Vrats bestows the devotee with great blessings from both Shiva and Parvati. One's life becomes happy and fulfilled. Health, wealth, family, children, and great luck are obtained from doing this puja.
